Dr. Nandini Nayak has a B. A. (Hons.) degree in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University; an M. A. in Social Work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Bombay; an L. L. B. degree from Delhi University and a PhD in Development Studies from the Department of Development Studies, SOAS, University of London. Her ongoing research is on the implementation of social policy, especially related to the National Food Security Act and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. Nandini also researches the work of social movements and their engagement with ‘rights based legislations’. Her research interests include the following thematic areas - political economy of development; political sociology of development; social exclusion, inequality and poverty; gender and development.

Prior to joining AUD, Nandini has taught at the Department of Development Studies, SOAS, University of London and at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, London. Before starting her career in academics, Nandini worked for several years in the development sector. This included work with ‘Lawyers’ Collective – Women’s Rights Initiative’ and with the ‘Office of the Commissioner of the Supreme Court of India in the Right to Food case’ (CWP 196/2001, PUCL v. Union of India & others). Nandini has also been associated with the ‘Right to Food Campaign’.
